"We ate à la carte. Prices were at the high end of the scale (e.g. main course – a small piece of cod and chanterelle mushrooms for just under €30) and the quality of the cooking did not match the ambition."

We stayed there for 4 nights and we where happy to follow a friends advice. The town Volkach itself is most beautiful located on the River Main (called Mainschleife on this part). A very attractive town surrounded by vineyards. The room clean and nice appointed. We had a larger room at the 2nd floor overlooking roofs and their 'Hof', an indoor garden, which on nice days you are able to have lunch and dinner outside. The disadvantage has been, that the lift goes only up to the 1st floor. Since we are on the riper side of life, we had a bit of our problems. Of course you could call it extra exercise. House keeping has been excellent and the service at the Restaurant was good as well. We liked the german breakfast and noticed the daily linen napkins and table sets. Very nice indeed. On one night we dined in their rustic and cosy Restaurant and took their degustation menu, which was truly excellent. It also came with 2 different type of wines for each dish from their own vineyard. We liked the whole atmosphere at the Hotel and as well the town itself, which seemed not overrun by tourist and also with quality shops and other Restaurants, wine bars and coffee shops.

We went there on the last leg of our journey back to Northern Germany and enjoyed the tastefully modernised interior of the old Gaststube very much. Excellent wine accompanied our three-course dinner that started very well with a collection of local tapas. I was slightly irritated by the menu, though: I am not a fan of this fashionable list of ingredients only, not giving any information about how a dish is prepared. A truly wonderful desert of homemade Kochkäse served with crisp bread soon made me smile again.

Second visit and very disappointed that despite having booked table in main ground floor restaurant all we were offered was a table in the empty restaurant on first floor. When we said we would rather leave a table was found for us as we had asked !! Food was not as good as previous visit, try the Schoppenhausle instead for better cooking and lower price.

We picked various items from the menu, including a set romantic 4-course menu. The menu suggestions were very imaginative, appropriate for the region and well-prepared. The wines were all produced by hotel/restaurant owner and from the immediate surrounding of Volkach. Food and wine were of excellent quality and complemented each other perfectly
