I went to the Mount Laurel Wegmans after I went to the gym earlier today. I went through self checkout and after scanning everything realized that it was credit only. I wanted to pay with cash so I called the cashier working the self checkout lane over. Her name is Alice. Alice came over and said. “No problem. I’ll just do the same thing for you that I did for that lady.” She proceeded to point to a white, blonde lady walking towards customer service with her two children. Alice then told me I would need to go to customer service with the receipt she will print out to pay. So far so good right? Here’s where things took a turn. I reached out to take the receipt from Alice. Alice then states, “I have to walk you to customer service.” When I questioned why she stated, “Some people suck and will just walk out with the cart.” I figured this was typical procedure except, when I walked up to the register I saw the little white blonde lady with her two children with her receipt in hand. At that point I was furious. I asked Alice why she gave the little white lady her receipt to pay but I had to be walked to customer service like I’m a thief. At first she looked confused but I asked her again and she said, “sorry, I’ll accept that.” Accept what exactly? That you’re profiling people? That you’re accusing customers of stealing? At that point Alice walked away and I proceeded to go off. I probably said every curse word in the book and definitely made a scene. I saw red. I’m a long time customer of Wegmans and this really made me disappointed and sick to my stomach. A nice lady with reddish/ blonde hair came over to ask me what’s wrong and calm me down. But it was too late. I’m not sure if Alice was racist or just profiling because I had workout clothes and a hoodie on but her behavior was totally uncalled for. The manager, Sean came out and I was still going off because in all my years, I don’t think I’ve ever encountered something like this. He was nice and was polite but at that point I wasn’t hearing anyone. Wegmans needs to do better. I don’t know that I’ll ever feel comfortable setting foot in that store.
