"This restaurant was very lovely set off the road with a clearly defined non smoking area which was nice for a change. The food is regional and good but a bit heavy for my tastes. Service was excellent."

We found this restaurant by Trip Advisor and GPS (we call her "Tante" meaning "Auntie" in German) while visiting Stift Goettweig above it. Walked in without reservations on a busy Sunday night. If you are anywhere in the Wachau, Schickh is worth a long drive for dinner. The building is tucked in a narrow, tree filled canyon over a tiny bridge and across railroad tracks. It is our idea of a hospitable country inn, with indoor and heated outdoor dining and very artful decor. The food was flat out wonderful! We had pumpkin soup, homemade head cheese in aspic, pumpkin spaghettini, and traditional poached schnitzel in broth. The pumpkin dishes were fabulous. My dear wife, who has a distinctly German palate and really likes sour, was absolutely speechless about the aspic appetizer! The pork was tender and very subtly flavored, and the applesauce accompaniment was the best I have ever eaten. Good service, an encyclopedic wine list indicative of the region, and a lovely crowd completed a really special evening which was all the better for the spontaneity that was possible via Trip Advisor.

I have been to Schickh many times and have never been dissapointed. It is located about one hour drive out of Vienna in the small town of Klein Wien. The menu is only in German, so difficult unless you go with a German speaker.I have been winter and summer and gives you a different atmosphere depending on the weather. In the summer, you can sit under the trees, or winter in the glass conservatory. The food is excellent with a good selection, complimented by local Austrian wines and of course a glass of scnapps with your coffee. It is well worth the journey as it is located in beautiful countryside and you can be assurred of a good welcome.

We got this place recommended by our host and have to say it was a good tip. Starters were on the house, veggies, bread and dip, all very fresh. For mains we had steak, which was cooked to perfection and the meat was local, obviously very good quality. But the star was the dessert. Creme brullee with eggnog and a fruit bowl, very good. The only downside would be that the place would deserve an overhaul regarding the ambience, or at least a bit of refreshment.

We were recommended this restaurant by a local friend, and it was almost perfect! The staff were happy to help us with suggestions for good local dishes and the meals were beautifuly presented and delicious, we have been eating Schnitzel all over Austria and this was definitely the best we had. There is a lovely out door seating area which was perfect on a summer afternoon.
