First, to be clear: this is a place without pretensions, with a downstairs level that serves the busy tourist traffic in front of the Abbey church. But it offers some very satisfying and unexpected dinner options, and we would happily try it again. The buckwheat galette – a kind of crepe with a savory filling – was crispy and flavorful, and made a generous meal. The pouti is something we 'd never come across before, a somewhat bready cousin of a terrine, made with pork, bacon, chard and prunes, served sliced and heated to develop a little crust around the edges. Delicious. The salad was massive, tasty and fresh. Even the house red wine was considerably better than the vintage bottle of the same variety that we had at a more pretentious place in town. The hard cider was also good. The server was very patient and friendly while serving a slightly rowdy group of English-speaking tourists at the next table. (This was also a good place for an ice cream on a hot afternoon.

Having opted for the Formule Express at €13.50, we rather liked the fact that all three courses arrived all at once on one plate! A Salad of Walnuts, Confit de Canard et Frites and a piece of Comté made for the perfect quick lunch and one beer, one soft drink and two coffees resulted in a total bill of just €37.50 for two. A remembrance of past bargain lunches in provincial France!

The 13.50 euro Formule Express was an abundant, tasty meal, and the location, just a short stagger up from the church, was perfect. We were ushered to an upstairs table, overlooking the front of the church, and served amply, cordially, and well. Way better than it had to be.

This was the only place we found open and serving food during a visit to Conques. We tried the dish of the day (chicken with salad). The size and quality of food was very good and the staff was nice. The menu is limited and staff only spoke French.

We asked to get at least a beer or coffee since it was raining outside and got a rude sorry this place is only for eating answer, but the place was far from full and we couldn 't wait outside.
