The person who greeted us when we arrived said 'can I help you? ', tone and expression suggesting perhaps we shouldn 't be there. I 'd booked a table for 4, we were given a table that was clearly for 2. Thinking this was a mistake, I said 'oh there are 4 of us '. the answer was simply 'this IS a table for 4 '. We sat. Five minutes later another member of staff offered to change the table, to be fair it was our decision not to move. However, although the restaurant wasn 't at all busy were were then totally ignored, not even a menu in HALF AN HOUR. Eventually one of our party went up to the bar where two of the staff were standing around talking, and took one. Suddenly one of the wait staff appeared with menus, as if they 'd only just seen us (we were literally right in front of them). When we 'd finished eating, nobody bothered to come to clear the table, or to ask if we wanted/ needed anything else, or offer us dessert or coffee. When we stood up to leave, someone did appear to clear, without of course interrupting her conversation with the other staff at the bar. A few years back Porters was a great place to eat, always packed at weekends, good atmosphere. Not any more, and given the level of service (which also has a very negative impact on the atmosphere in genera) this is hardly surprising.
