What a fabulous restaurant in the heart of Valdepeñas!! Steps from our hotel and highly recommended by our concierge as it was very popular with the locals, we were greeted by a very friendly host who advised they were full but we could come back the next day for lunch. We are so happy we did! The restaurant doesn't look like much on the outside but it is an absolute jewel inside and a hive of activity! The bread is homemade and the traditional Manchegan cuisine and wines were absolutely delicious. Our hosts left us in the good hands of an English-speaking waitress who was bubbly, fun and very attentive who patiently let us try our somewhat limited Spanish. As we were leaving, the host asked us to wait while he called his wife from the back of the house so they could both say goodbye properly. Reservations recommended.
Restaurante Venta del Comendador, which we discovered while searching for a restaurant for our over-the-road route, seemed like a pretty good option for a location like Valdepeñas that we stopped by for the first time. Local dishes, historical place and being the most popular restaurant of the region shaped our decision. Despite the reservation it was so busy restaurant and we started to experience serious problems from the first minute in the restaurant. When ordinary plates were added to parameters such as the incompatibility of the staff, the low quality of service, and the late arrival of each plate, we realized that we had made a wrong choice. We tried 4 dishes from the weekend menu: only Baked Lamb was worth talking about. Menu €24
We found the restaurant on trip adviser and our super hotel receptionist Sonia agreed it was a great place to eat. Sonia was so right each course was wonderful. Proper cooking with a gourmet garnish. Our starter of crab and avocado salad was fresh and lovely. My main of slow cooked lamb was beautiful to eat as was my husbands Dorada. To finish we had the house cheesecake and flan. The house wine Raices Airen a white Valdepenas was the perfect accompaniment. Total bill of 37 euros excellent value we will be back
Great if you like steaks and some local specialities. Downstairs has a lively atmosphere which, if you dine as a couple, you will look down on from the balcony which looks like it 's a set for a Western. Plenty of locals eating there which is always a good sign, staff were a bit 'jaded ' on our particular night and not overly helpful.
