This That, Café 3 Soap Street, Manchester M4 1EW Tel:0161 832 4971 Date of visit 5th October 2023 It is National Curry week so you would expect me to be sampling one somewhere! A trip into my hometown, Manchester, on a wet miserable day, a disappointing start to the day waiting for what seemed a lifetime for the train from Cark to Lancaster with a change to the Manchester Airport train. The Northern service train was filthy, it hadn’t seen a vacuum cleaner or a damp cloth in a very long time. I wouldn’t mind, the damn thing was parked up somewhere yesterday or are the cleaners on strike as well? Anyway, the This That Café. A difficult one this, I had been really looking forward to sampling the delights that I was led to believe on offer here! I struck up a very interesting conversation with a fellow traveller on the train who worked in Glasgow and lived in Sheffield, now that is some commute! A lovely lady who was of Indian descent and we had a very interesting conversation all things India, who went by the name of Kaniz. We had discussed my reason for this journey, and I had expressed my anticipation in view of my sons visit here and the reviews that I had read. Situated in a grubby little, hard to find, side street off high street, in the Northern Quarter of Manchester. I learnt many years ago not to judge a book by its cover following my visit to a grubby looking restaurant in Little Horton Lane, Bradford where to this day, the food was some of the best I’ve ever had! So, eventually, I found the place, even the Taxi driver did not know where it was! It was packed, but not to worry, they turn customers round here at an alarming pace. Now the SP here is that you approach a Bain Marie type of operation where the owner and his assistant offer you a choice of rice from two on offer, boiled or Biryani, and you choose three from six or maybe eight different curries to have with your rice! Which change on each day of the week. There are a selection of condiments, onions and Coriander on a small table as you leave the Bain Marie. Communication was a bit problematic, but I pointed out to a Lamb dish, a chic pea dish, and a sag aloo dish. It was unceremoniously dumped on the plate with the rice and quickly handed to me, I was then asked if I wanted a Naan or Roti to which chose a couple of rotis, these arrived very quickly piping red hot, soft and very fresh. To be fair the food was not that bad, but it left a strange taste in my mouth for the rest of the day, and again to be fair, I have had better. But if its posh nosh you are looking for with nice comfortable surroundings, This That is not the place! It is not licenced, and I did not discover if they minded you bringing in your own beer, no one else had so I concluded that they did not allow it. But it is extremely cheap, I think it cost me under £15.00 The place was extremely busy with a very quick turn round of customers. Then off once more into the rain and a walk round town before heading for home! If it’s cheap and cheerful food, you are looking for then head for This That, otherwise head for the Dishoom on Bridge Street! I would award this place 7/10

Knew this place from when I was at university years ago. Went back with a friend (regular customer). Though the place had changed visually the essence hadn't. If you want really good Pakistani food that won't cost an arm and a leg, this is the place. No frills, the food is the focus here. Staff pleasant and respectful. Highly recommend.

Fabulous Indian food served simply. Pile on as much fresh green chilli and onion as you want. Second time here, if I was local I'd go twice a week. Friendly service and home cooked, fresh and flavoursome.

Visited this place 15 years ago on a visit to Manchester, pleased to return and report that it was just as good as I remembered. Lots of choice, lots of flavours, great value and highly recommended.
