A pleasant little bar tucked away down one of the side streets off of the Corn Street strip, the focus does seem to be work on drinks here than food, with only one other table eating on our Friday evening visit. That said, it wasn’t very busy with drinkers either, we pretty much had the place to ourselves, although we did notice that he tables outside had been packed when we walked past earlier on. The drinks selection certainly has something of a Belgium theme to it, with a number of unusual offerings available both on tap and bottled. Food choice is a little more conventional though, and the menu offered a selection of both small plates and “heartier meals”. Being slightly tired with the current tapas obsession by so many chefs we both chose from the heartier section. I opted for the seared Cornish trout with samphire, lemon, cider, buttery lobster bisque and toasted flaked almonds, and this was on the whole a pretty decent dishes with a couple of fillets of well coked trout and a tasty sauce. Across the table, the beef burger with crispy coral lettuce, beef tomato, cheddar, garlic aioli (is there any other sort? , pretzel bun and red pepper jam was perfectly ok but didn’t really live up to the sum of it’s parts. There was nothing at all wrong with it, but it just seemed a little lacking in flavour given the promising list of ingredients. Service was friendly and efficient, whilst the food prices were pretty much par for the course. Drinks seemed expensive though, with my pint of Belgian ale coming in at £7.70 by the time you’ve included the service charge, and the cheapest medium (175ml glass of wine was £8.25.

Visited the Strawberry Thief for dinner and sampled a few of their Belgian Beers. The found was good Crispy Pork Belly with new potato's and pak choi with a sticky kriek boon fruit sauce was excellent as was the Stoofvelees (not quite so keen on the walnut dumplings). The Palm beer was excellent and the service really good. Would recommend a visit and enjoyed our visit. One very minor gripe and it is very much a personal thing when we paid the bill we had a 10% service charge added but nobody mentioned it (its shown as discretionary on the menu) but it was automatically added on and we also gave a cash tip which we prefer to do as we know staff then receive it directly. As above, the service was good and everybody was really friendly and efficient but if its discretionary then it should at least be mentioned prior to just automatically adding it onto bills. Thanks.

The Strawberry Thief is a small restaurant offering a wide range of Belgian beers, ciders and food with a European slant e.g. beetroot soup with new potatoes and bread. The atmosphere is relaxed and cosy, with William Morris prints on the walls. Staff are very friendly and laid back and knowledgeable about the extensive selection of continental beers on offer. The menu allows you to choose from small plates through to larger mains. The portion sizes are quite small and quite pricey for what you get. Tasty nevertheless. Popular and dog friendly.

My friends stumbled upon this place last year and recommended it for a visit. No if you want a pint of Stella or a weathspoons price point then don't bother.its not for you . Quality, unusual and artisan beers for the more discerning taste ,each beer is served by knowledgeable servers who know their stuff ,not cheap but then it's not your run of the mill beers , Quality snacks made with high quality ingredients worth every penny.
