I wanted to make our last meal in Berlin a real local affair so we found this very authentic looking Berlin restaurant called Restauration 1840 in the Hackescher Markets. There were a whole heap of restaurants, one after the other filling the centre of this great market area but this one just had the feel we were looking for.Service was pleasant though over run with customers so a little slow but when it was our turn, the waitress was very helpful. I ordered an original wiener schnitzel (Viennese is pork, original is beef) and a Warsteiner beer and settled into a tasty, big portioned german lunch. The schnitzel was huge but also moist and tasty and served with their potato and cucumber salad combination that sounds weird but tastes great. The beer was cold and refreshing. Not done yet, I ordered the apple strudel which was served with cream and ice cream. It was light, the pastry was flaky as it should be and the apple was delicious. Too much for one but my wife, who had just looked on on my “local” fetish whilst eating her big and juicy burger, hardly helped though she did admit that it was very very good.We saw heaps of these homely, local, we would call them outside pubs, in Berlin but if you are in the Hackescher Market area (and we suggest you go here as it is a really cool, trendy boutiques, small art galleries) then Restauration 1840 is worth eating at.
