Whilst visiting Williamstown, we visited the Old Bake House Tavern for a drink and after looking at its dinner menu, decided to come back for dinner.When we arrived for dinner, mine host was a little bit frazzled because some of his kitchen staff had not turned up and the restaurant (which is part of the tavern's complex) was getting busy (for Williamstown). However, all was saved when the missing staffer turned up and everything progressed smoothly from there.Seafood appeared to be the speciality of the house; 3/4 of us had fish (salmon, battered trio of fish fillets, seafood basket) whilst the other had a steak. All of our dishes were pronounced to be very good indeed.The wine list is small but very adequate AND reasonably priced.Overall we enjoyed our visit to the Old Bake House and if we ever stay in Williamstown again, we will certainly visit there again.
I have written at least two reviews where I have been critical of a number of aspects of the Old Bake House Tavern. However, we have interstate friends who regularly shout us to a meal there so I was not looking forward to our latest visit. I normally order a blue steak which, when cooked properly is wonderful but, if poor quality steak is not cooked properly, then the meal is an absolute disaster which has been the case in the past. Therefore you can imagine my surprise when my steak was excellent, my partner's salmon superb and our friends' meals equally impressive. When we ordered coffee and tea we were told that their coffee machine was broken but the owner said, 'I have a kettle'. My instant coffee was excellent and my friend's tea bag of equal quality - for which we were not charged. This, and the quality of the meal, will have us returning again.
After two previous visits to the Old Bakehouse Tavern when I had less than satisfactory, tough steaks, I was dubious about returning. However, this time I had the squid and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the meal. However, we were a group of four and everyone complained about how cold the room was which detracted significantly from our experience. If my friends did not like dining here I would not return - but it now seems to be an annual occurrence for us.
We're been going here for a few years. The food is always spot on and great value for money. Staff always lovely and eager to please. Only a small restaurant but doesn't stop them from putting out wonderful food. Will be definitely going back.
