We were walking the Camino and stayed in Estella on a Sunday night. No restaurants seemed to be open, or only the bar was open. On walking in it was clear that people were drinking, not eating, and that they too were not serving food. However a lovely lady behind the bar asked the waiter (owner? whether they could rustle up some food, and they enthusiastically sorted out some space for us. The waiter was intelligent, helpful and amusing (in a grown up not grating way and (we think helped us choose the food that was going to be more readily produced on a Sunday night. Don’t expect cordon bleu, but it did the trick for us, as hungry walkers. At the end of the meal we tried the Navarran digestif (called Patxaran very nice indeed, not too sweet or strong, lovely fruity taste. Our impressive waiter seemed really pleased that we had asked for it, and actually so were we! Lovely stuff.
The service is something to behold. Having waited 20 mins to get some drinks, we ordered and then sat back and watched the chaos as a slightly incompetent waiter was unable to handle the baying crowd. The food is perfectly nice and there are plenty of staff to handle the covers. I think we got caught in the middle of a perfect storm of busy and average. I am not too bothered about the unique service, it allowed my wife and I an easy afternoon in the square. I won't recommend it, but I'm sure it's better than our experience. Así es la vida.
We were a group of 11 and nothing was too much to ask. The menu del día was 15€ with plenty of wine and beer included and three generous serves. The food was good-excellent and I like my food. The Spanish guys I was traveling with were hesitant to spend the 15€ but in the end they all agree that it was well worth it. Great experience. Definitely recommend.
We stayed in Estella whilst on the Camino and had the meal of the day. We couldn't fault it. The meal was fantastic with lovely wine and bread. I would recommend this place to everyone.
