A really poor visit, which as an Islander disappoints me as I very much want this historic venue to succeed. We visited early on a Friday lunchtime to avoid any rush which worked as it was very quiet. We ordered 2 of Sophie's pies, one with mash and one with chips. Both arrived with mash and so we asked which was which so we knew which was wrong. Although the pies were different shapes the server did not know the difference between the pies. We took a chance and sent one back to replace the mash by chips. The dish came back within 2 minutes with overcooked chips barely warm, clearly not fresh. We both started our meals and both pies being very cool, not cold but certainly not hot. My mash was the same. When asked if everything ok we said no. Replacement meals were offered but declined as already we had sent 1 back. A refund of the food parts of our order were offered and accepted. A 3-5 days process to return was stated but after 11 days nothing has been received. This was a really disappointing experience.

We tried several places on Hayling to get a Sunday roast but everywhere was fully booked. Leaving Hayling we stumbled across the Maypole. We entered and were glad to be told they were serving food and as the place was very quiet we got a table. The first impression was a damp table cloth (odd in a pub)which made the menu and napkins wet. We were going to move but all the cloths were damp. We ordered and within a few minutes are lunch arrived which always a worrying sign. The roast: potatoes quite good, 2 slices of meat was a bit mean, the vegetables were ever frozen or just over cooked as very mushy. We ordered the optional pigs in blankets, nice bacon but the sausage was mushy with no substance. For £16 plus the extras this is up there price wise with some great roasts so sadly will not be returning. The final annoyance was a radio playing, who wants to listen to adverts while eating. This review is meant to be constructive criticism that will help the mangers tweak things for the positive of the business.

My partner is from south east London so when we heard there was pie and mash locally we jumped at the chance to go. Super friendly staff, great value for money and big portions. Pie, mash and liquor was a bit of home for the other half. We loved it and can’t wait to go back. Attended with elderly relative whose in a wheelchair, they were very accommodating for her.

Pleasant, relaxed venue 3 open fireplaces, with two in the main bar area always nice. Pleasant service, and friendly staff. Drinks only, but nice to return, after having not been here for a couple of years.
