L'etape Du Berger

It’s hard to imagine a better place to sit out on a terrace for lunch. At the top of the Col de Tourmalet is this delightful restaurant overlooking the mountains, basking in sunshine, and offering wonderful food and wine. Two of us shared a shoulder of lamb and we chose the entrecôte which was so big! We manage to eat all it was so delicious, served with great potatoes and salad. We had a very tasty peach flavoured aperitif first along with some great wine suggested by the waiter Patrice.

Near the Col du Tourmalet (of the Tour de France fame) accessible in summer or in winter if you ski at La Mongie. The views from the terrace are majestic. Eric, the owner, is a local farmer and has about 2000 sheep, cows, and pigs. All the meat is from his farm. The best dish is a shoulder of lamb (for 2 people) that has to be pre-ordered in the morning. I have never had better. Any of their dishes should be the envy of other establishments. I highly recommend it.

Busy at lunchtime while skiing, however service was very good. Food reasonably priced, however not copious. You can't get tap water there, so be prepared to pay for bottled water, 2 euros for a half litre bottle. Toilets are outside, and downstairs. It would have been nice if the log fire had been lit on the cold day that we were there.

Think this is the best spot for lunch in the Baréges/La Mongie ski area. Good local food (La Saussice my favorite), and outstanding views. We found the staff very helpful and friendly!

Restaurant on top of the world. Great views. Great food. Reasonably priced. Make sure to book-very popular
