Having spent the morning exploring the old town, my wife and I wanted to take a well earned break and eat a traditional light meal for lunch with a glass or two of vino..... “When in Rome”,....or Palma to be precise. Without taking any inspiration or guidance from the internet, we stumbled upon this delightful looking bistro that to our eye didn’t require any further investigations, so we poured in and asked for a table. We very quickly established a rapport with the proprietor who’s Spanish, whilst excellent was clearly not native, yet his broken English seemed to contain an enormous vocabulary. As time went by and the excellent service of perfectly prepared tapas dishes came and went, our host brought our attention his French wife in the kitchen. She clearly has mastered the local cooking to an extremely high standard and the kitchen itself was not hidden and was clearly immaculately kept. A refreshing beer, a couple of glasses of wine and half a dozen lovely tapas dishes. All this wrapped up within this delightful small bistro with a skilled chef and an amazingly entertaining host, who regrettably will never see this positive review since he explained to me and my wife at length that he has no interest or involvement in the internet and quite specifically Trip Advisor. (It was only a couple of days after our visit that I chose to write a review and got the chance to sit and chuckle at previous reviews and more so, our host’s replies. Thank you Sir.
This is quite a small restaurant, the upstairs closed, and run by a charming, albeit lugubrious, elderly man, in tandem with his Vietnamese lady chef. There are only about 5 tables. There is a menu in Spanish, one in English on large chalk boards, plus the tapas menu. We had 5 tapas, and all were great, though sometimes sat a minute after the chef put them on the counter and rang the bell. The owner never rushed to serve them, or anything else. Many of the tapas came with soy dips, and/or sticky rice, and the Bistrot description is a bit misleading, since the only Spanish dish we had was the deep fried padron peppers. This wasn't always obvious from the menu, however. There is a decent winelist, at very modest restaurant prices, and the food was also keenly priced. Strongly recommended for an entertaining meal, and the food very good. You probably need to book.
Fantastic French/Vietnamese food served by a lovely host with great sense of humour, not far from the cathedral. The dim sum were super tasty. Some of the previous reviews suggest the front of house service is a bit eccentric we got the impression he just wants to serve people who enjoy good food and aren’t annoying. As English people often embarrassed by our compatriots in European restaurants, we feel his pain. Would definitely go back and eat and chat more, lovely atmosphere and food was great!
Not sure if 'quirky ' is the best description of this place, unless it means different because you can get a variety of great quality food here at a fair price. My wife and I really enjoyed our lunch and don 't think you 're lugubrious in the slightest! Thank you for a memorable and enjoyable meal.
