It's weekend and we celebrated two birthdays. We were a group of 14 persons and one dog... the menu was pre-ordered obviously. The restaurant is a traditional Austrian Wirtshaus, somewhere in the countryside. The village is called Ottenschlag / Mühlviertel. It's about 20 minutes out of Linz. The restaurant is in a traditional farmhouse, and the trip to getting there is a very scenic one.We did "Ritteressen" meaning we ate like the knights. Though admittedly more civilized, with knife and fork. The main course (we knew we would get A LOT of food, so we skipped the starters) consisting of ribs, schnitzel, roasted duck, roasted chicken, and pork roast were served along with 2 types of dumplings and potatoes in a big pan. Along with that they served warm red and white cabbage salad, potato salad, and beet root salad. You notice that all the food is properly made, meaning the traditional way. They use family recipes for that. And that's what you taste. SO GOOD! For dessert, there was a good selection of home made cakes, which made me choose a Kardinalschnitte. That's basically a sponge cake, with cream and a very soft merengue. The beverage list offers a good selection of Austrian wines, regional beers and excellent Schnaps (the Austrian grappa). Try out the Marillenschnaps (apricot) or Nussschnaps (nuts), they are very smooth. The service was fast, efficient and very friendly and polite. They obviously know their menu and they also got a good sense of humor. If you go there, have a German speaker with you, I don't think they speak English at all. But this restaurant so deserves praise / attention in such forum.
