Whilst staying in Englos on the outskirts of Lille i did some research to find a good restaurant away from the Euro 2016 crowds and near to our hotel. I found La Guingette, a little too far to walk but it seemed with a taxi fare.. This restaurant is off the beaten track and tourists are unlikely to stumble across it.After the taxi driver took the wrong route we arrived after 9pm, last orders are at 9.30pm. La Guinguette is located in what seems to be a quiet residential area and had a few locals finishing their meals. The welcome was very warm from Anne, the owner. She speaks far better English than our French so communication was easy. Anne also has a printed English translation of the dishes. She helped up with our choices. Most of us had the St Jaques in garlic butter to start. Probably the best scallops I have ever had, fresh, soft and tender. A dry white wine the perfect accompaniment. For main course I had Cote de Veau. Others had fillet de beouf and an offal dish . There seemed to be several offal related options (not my cup of tea). The veal chop was large and surprisingly boneless but melted in the mouth. It was delicious. The frites were amazing too. They had a hand cooked look to them. Fluffy inside, crispy on the outside. Can't remember the red wine we had but it went well with the meal. We were the last people left in the restaurant but still made to feel welcome so we ploughed on with desserts.Another amazing course.Anna husband Frank is the chef and we could hear the cheers from the kitchen as France won their Euro 2016 match.I had an amazing dessert, small short pastry tarts with fresh raspberries and strawberries. Coffees to finish, bill paid then Anne offered the five of us a lift back to the hotel. What an amazing host and a superb meal. The best of our week long visit to France. Worth coming out of the centre of Lille to try this restaurant out.

We loved this restaurant so much we ate here twice in days! From the first greeting we were made welcome. The fois gras starter is soo good, one of my favourite dishes, everything was washed down with a perfect Sancerre Rose ... just delicious....Compliments to the chef and the lady in front of house (who may well have been the owner), you were all wonderful as was the food you served. I would happily eat here again
