La Bastide - Table reservation

There are several very good restaurants in Eymet. While not one of the very best in town, La Bastide serves a pretty good meal for a fair price. I believe it was once a very popular and well regarded restaurant but has lost its way...and a lot of clientele recently. Choice is reasonable but not extensive, service is attentive but not overly so and the wine list caters to all tastes and budgets. So far so good. On the other hand improvements are needed if La Bastide is to match the quality and variety of its competitors. Firstly it should be noted that there are no vegetarian options on the menu. In this is a pretty major omission. All of our main courses were served with salad (leaves only) and chips. The restaurant prides itself on serving local French cuisine which is good, but steak chips and salad is not particularly creative or regional (despite the addition of a foie gras topping to the steak). Deserts were fairly standard and to everyone's taste. However, the biggest negative of all is the lack of atmosphere and the old fashioned decor (all very rather than . Bright unflattering lighting does not make for an inviting ambiance. It's all rather soulless and antiseptic which spoils the dining experience. So, dim the lights, get the decorators in, add some much needed colour to add warmth and interest and background music to create the right kind of vibe and I am sure the punters will come flocking back.

I tried to post a review not long after my visit here but it was refused for some reason although I don’t know exactly why, never mind try number two! Just off the square and directly opposite the church in Eymet is La Bastide, the...last bastion of French cooking in the town. The restaurant is chic and modern and the food good quality, well-cooked, well-presented and reasonably priced and their house red is excellent, they deserve to be better frequented than they are. The waitress explained that very few local French people now eat anywhere in Eymet, just the ex-pats and visitors, the French go out the village to eat, and the ex-pats want the fast food to be found in the main square. My wife and I ate here on a Friday lunchtime and were one of just two couples in the place yet the pizza place in the main square was packed. I was told that they get no more than four or five covers in the evening and are liable to have to close if the winter season is poor again and that, to me, is tragic.

You can only eat inside here, so if you’re looking for a restaurant to sit relax and watch the world go by, this one isn’t for you. The restaurant isn’t massive, it has more if a modern feel to it as well, rather than the...rustic approach. The lighting let the ambience down, as it was far too bright. The food made up for this though. Well presented fayre, with the most wonderful home made fries! The house wine was also good, being offered in various sizes of carafes.

Had an excellent meal at La Bastide on Sunday. The restaurant must have taken onboard suggestions re lighting as the restaurant felt very warm and inviting with subtle background music. We had seafood casserole with a light curry sauce, confit of duck, steak with fois...gras, cheese plate and ice cream with Chantilly cream. Every dish was perfectly cooked and delicious. We can’t wait to return.

A lovely meal with warm friendly service but the decor is bland, cold and the office-type ceiling lights all need changing. A few days to change the decor and this would be a great restaurant hopefully similar feedback from other diners will be...taken on board.
