I was recommended to try this , as the bar did a great paella. Having found it 10 mins above La canada, you take the lower road and can drive into the centre drop everyone off and then park down the bottom and walk back up. Firstly not a word of english is spoken but you can get yourself understood , the menu is basic salads, pil pil, tapas and meat/fish- unfortuantely paella was not on the menu currently. We ordered and drinks which were cheap came quickly , as did our first dish of avocado and tomato salad, which was extremely tasty and plentiful. The mains which came were piping hot and freshly made, the dover sole was huge with great chips (all for 8 euro's) , the fried salt cod and chips again was lovely and at 6 euro's for a half portion delicious. They were extreemly friendly and helpful and its worth trying to find this for a different place for lunch

We wanted to return as we had been told that Paquita does a brilliant paella , It was extremely hot when we went and they insisted that we come inside to be more comfortable . Whilst we waited we ordered a jug of sangria and had what was undoubtedly the best we've ever had, what they didn't put into this it was fantastic . We had the paella , tortilla, tuna steak , whitebait , salad chips . She cooks all this fresh in a little kitchen out the back. Everything was piping hot and very well cooked, washed down by another jug of sangria. Both Paquita and her husband are extremely friendly though no english is spoken , we managed to converse and they even told about the festival in the autumn when we return . its simple Spanish cooking done very very well.

Despite being about 10 km from the coast the village of Ojen seems more distant. One reason for this is the winding roads take a while to negotiate but the main reason is that it is not very touristy, this place seems to be the real deal. Bar El Calabazo is the locals local. The owner was very helpful in moving umbrellas in order to shade us. Drinks were delivered promptly. While sipping the drinks and absorbing the beatutiful surroundings of buildings and people, we decided to order snacks. The food was really delicious and complemented the whole experience. The drinks and snacks cost a fraction of what they would have 10 km south. Give this village and this bar a visit.

We ordered grilled fish (gilt head bream) for my self and a steak for my husband. Both were cooked to perfection and came with a choice of sides. I have been eating fish almost every day for 2 months all over Andalucía and this was the best I have had. It was clean, simple and totally fresh. My husband’s steak was tender and grilled exactly as he asked. We also had freshly squeezed orange juice, that tasted as if the oranges were just plucked of the tree. With coffees it came to under 40 Euro, which was great value..
