Private event for 60 catered on the evening August 5th, 2022, in Rome, Ga. Carmelita's was scheduled to arrive for prep at 5pm for meal service at 7pm, the crew arrived at 6:40pm and was not ready to serve until 7:30pm. The food was less than mediocre. The yams were canned and swimming in the canned juices without the spice flavorings you would expect on yams. The Red Velvet cake was dry. The sweet potato pies were bland, again lacking the expected spices for flavor. The pasta dishes were thrown together, again lacking flavor, the mac and cheese was tolerable, and the greens were good. I did not hear any complaints about the salmon, but folks commented negatively about the fried chicken. The peach cobbler was terrible, with peaches and dough (nearly raw) thrown in the pan, room temperature. I was not expecting perfection, but I was expecting a good, hot meal. There are no excuses that would make sense of this culinary travesty. All of the access and contacts needed for venue support were provided to Carmalita's. We tried to support, but...order catering at your own risk. I hated having to write this bad review.
We normally visit Doug’s Place for Southern cooking but have talked about trying Carmelita’s for a while. Finally made it there this afternoon. So many times when you read great reviews on a restaurant you get there and are not impressed. The food was wonderful as was our service. We told Chris to tell whoever was cooking that they did a great job. Well Carmelita came to our table and asked if everything was good. We shocked her a little when we both answered “no”. It was great! Joan had a vegetable plate while I had fried chicken, mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese. The food was served in to go containers and it was a good thing because we couldn’t eat all that food in one setting. The leftovers are supper this evening. If you love southern down home cooking, you’ll love this place. Like Arnold said “we’ll be back”.
This place feels like home. Loving atmosphere, delicious food, I would say they have the best fried chicken in Rome Ga. I ordered from here for a very last minute Easter dinner, and they were accommodating and provided a quick turn around. Can not wait for my family to enjoy this beautifully prepared meal, I will definitely be a returning customer!
