Looks really cute and liked the sound of a mushroom spaghetti dish so we hopped in for dinner. What a mistake… My pasta was a lump of spaghetti that had not been stirred from the moment it left the packet and although it was one large clump, they poured a horrible mushroom sauce and served it to me as my dinner!! What disappointed me the most is the owner served it to our table even though he could clearly see it was completely inedible. So I ended up eating bread for dinner. The owner watched with a worried face as I ate the bread, yet did nothing! As he takes our plates away (my plate almost untouched) he looks embarrassed yet says nothing…As he went to walk away we pointed out that the pasta meal was truly terrible. The bill arrives he still charged us 14 euros for a dish that was inedible. We wrongly thought he would try to do the right thing so we pointed out the obvious, the meal could not be eaten so he discounted it to 10 euros!! I’m not being stingy but if you want to serve meals that can’t be eaten you can’t expect to be paid, We called the owners wife over and she wanted to know what was wrong with my meal, why didnt like it. I sent her to the kitchen, look at it and tell me what you think. She came back a minute later saying yes, I am very sorry, no good, it has not been stirred. I will not charge you. So we gave her our card to pay. We go to leave and I say to my husband can I see the receipt and can you believe she went ahead and charged us anyway hoping we wouldn’t notice. I ended up having to stand up in front of about 6 other diners and demand a refund whist she pretended she forgot and very reluctantly gave us a refund. We have just bought a property in chinon and you could not drag me back to this restaurant. My Recommendation is to choose another restaurant, there are plenty to chose from in chinon.
Lovely fresh food served in traditional French style; lots of choice and most importantly for us the restaurant was able to be flexible for the family member with dietary restrictions 'best meal of the holiday for me ' she said! Chinon is a beautiful little gem of a town, with small artisan shops and lots of eateries but this is probably one of the best! Excellent service and major thanks to the lovely manageress who helped us we gave her a hug! Hope to return and highly recommended for others!
We were staying at the Best Western next door but that hotel has no evening dining, so we came here by default. And we were not disappointed. Superb ambiance, friendly staff and excellent food and wind were well-priced from an extensive menu. The Cafe Gourmand was exemplary.
Friendly service that welcomed our rudimentary French! A nice dining room where we enjoyed fish in curry sauce, and a delicious lamb with exceptional potatoes dauphinois and bacon-wrapped green beans. A charming evening
