We walked down Rue des Basques to watch them filming something. It was a Basque band and all were dressed in the white suites and red berets and scarves. Loud cheerful music but take after take!! We'd walked past the Bar du Marché and as it was lunchtime decided to go in. We were lucky that we got a table immediately. The place was full of locals and buzzing. We decided on a steak haché which came pink as requested and great home cooked chips. The other meal was Basque black pudding served with apples and mash. They served a complimentary bowl of green salad, nicely dressed and as fresh as could be. We had a carafe of rosé. Nice experience and friendly and efficient staff. We went back a second time for lunch and ate a turkey dish which was served with penne and chorizo. If you want a quiet lunch don't go - this place is extremely busy and full of chatting guests and busy staff! A great experience
Looking for a restaurant on a rainy day in Bayonne and happened to pass by the Bar du Marche just as the door was opened and a gust of raucous noise assaulted me. I was surprised because at a quick first glance it didn't appear open. So I went inside and there was standing room only. Everyone was busy eating, talking, sharing tables, waiters were moving fast, drinks and plates were whizzing by and everyone seemed very happy with their meals. I waited by the crowded bar for a table and was not disappointed at all when one finally became available. I was seated, served in good time and had a delicious vegetarian meal, a couscous and vegetable plat du jour. I couldn't have been happier. The ambience was great and the staff extremely friendly.
Allways perfect..go there if you are in or near Bayonne but make reservation because its full every time. Typical basque specialties. Very good menu for a nice price and the people are very friendly.
Simple choice of typical basque dishes. Very tasty and very good. Salt cod omelet and lemon tart very nice. Home made fries as well all the other dishes.
