We were driving North after a holiday in the Charente region, pottering back to the UK avoiding the peages if possible. We drove off the minor main road as the map showed a ruined chateau and we thought it might be pretty - it was. Driving on through the village of Montreuil-Bonnin, we hoped there might be somewhere to get lunch (it was after noon, so everyone had to be somewhere - the local bar-brasserie). We found the Bar du Lavoir at the centre of the village, not surprisingly opposite an old Lavoir. Poking our head in the door showed it to be full of local people (mostly men) eating and drinking at long tables with bright plastic tablecloths. No menu was in sight, no one obviously spoke English, so we asked in our poor French if we could eat, and we were gestured to an empty table, laid with plates, cutlery and a wine glass. Still no menu. Then, a good sign, Madame placed a jug of water, a jug of red wine and a big basket of fresh bread on the table. This was soon followed by a serving dish with two large stuffed tomatoes, great tasting. Then a dish of noodles with spring rolls (we never did decide quite what was in them, but they too were tasty). This in turn was followed by a dish of a rich beef and carrot stew, with a dish of rice. Then came a large plate of cheeses and a knife to help ourselves and finally a slice of excellent custard tart and coffee. All for €11 a head. Great food and great value - well worth the detour for a slice of real French rural life. Shame our French was't better.

We put nearby restaurants into the Sat Nav and this place came up, as we were hungry we followed the directions and were pleasantly surprised by the pretty viallage and warm welcome we received from the lady in charge and all the locals already seated and tucking into their main course. As mentioned by other reviewers no menu, but five generous courses with wine all for 12 Euro's per head, you have to take pot luck as there are no alternatives but for a full French experience it's well worth a visit.
