I discovered this little jewel of a restaurant about 3 years ago when I was in my old campground. I praised that I'm always going to Calif. I'll dinate there at least once. Recently, I was back in Costa Mesa for my son's high school department. I suggested we dine at Avila’s! No argument from my son - he also loves the food there (from the food there 3 years ago with me.) So we went to Avila and had dinner. Speaking for me and a (recent culinary graduate) I love the Chili Verde at Avila’s! They use the right cut of the meat and the taste of the meat and the sauce only bursts with taste! There is no place like it and my Tonque is on the cook there at Avila’s! Jobs well done! The staff is also great, friendly-cheery. Oh, I can't forget the beans, rice and the tortillas are great! The presentation, textures are nothing but super. I can't say anything negative about this place - this is a fun place, service again was excellent! And prices are very reasonable. I was and am sad to go back to Seattle because the Mexican food there on a scale of 1-10, 1 is the worst and 10 excellent, is about 4 to 5.

I drove through this restaurant for years, which means coming over and recently my wife and I did and I am very happy. This is really traditional Mexican food that I came to love when I moved to California almost 40 years ago, which was usual before, but now is hard to find. It has all my favorites, but I liked the shrimps especially. Prices are also very reasonable. There are several of these restaurants around, but it's not a chain or franchise, it's a family that owns it. My wife went to a Santa Ana near her work and loved the food there as much. Great place to have a nice meal and a few drinks and relax. They have both inner and outer seats. During the dark days of the pandemic we were taken from them to make sure that they stayed in the store and found the exception food as well as when we eat there. I have found that at the popular times there can be a long waiting time to come so if you go on a Friday night, go early.

Avila is extremely busy on a Friday night, but we only had to wait about 5 to 8 minutes until we had three parties. Our food was delicious. I had Chicken Mole Enchiladas, which I enjoyed enormously. My brother had the Carnitas and he said it was tender and tasteful. His wife ordered a burrito, but maybe because of a confusion she ended up with the appetizer sampler what she said was still great.

There are so many Mexican restaurants in Costa Mesa, but this place is in my Top 5. The salsa and guacamole are always fresh! I come here for the moles that are the perfect sauce to go to chicken. Spacious portions and great service.
