Sonderbar Flumserberg

Throwback to December 2021. We chose Flumzerberg because it was near Zurich. We took from Zurich station to Sargans station towards Chur. The train ride is about 55 mins or 1hr15 mins depending on the train. Then we took a 40 mins yellow bus ride up the hill. The scenery is spectacular during the bus ride. This ski resort seems to cater mainly to the Swiss. We were one of the few Asians there, maybe it was during the pandemic. Anyway, we stayed for 2 nights and the service in this apartment hotel was great. The place is like a cottage, clean and cosy. Breakfast was decent but the view was great. We had a wonderful dinner at the hotel. We ordered rösti and cordon blue which I highly recommended. Location was good as it’s near the ski lifts and a pizza cafe was about 10mins walk. When we checked out, the counter lady gave us a small jar of Swiss honey. So sweet of her.

Good Aspects: The location is perfect, being situated right next to the ski lift. The restaurant provides homely and tasty meals for both dinner and breakfast. The staff in the restaurant are attentive and pleasant. Areas for Improvement: The quality of the beds and bedding is subpar, leading to itchy nights and discomfort due to the mattresses and pillows. The sound insulation is poor, as one can clearly hear the activities in the neighboring bathroom. The ski boot heater, which is only operational for an hour from 7 AM, fails to adequately dry or heat the boots. While the electric saver switches are an environmentally considerate feature, they are used excessively, resulting in the space being dark and unwelcoming.

I was positively surprised, having read other reviews, with this hotel. Sure it’s not the most modern but it has a homely feel and the staff were very nice. Breakfast and dinner were really good; ski rental right in the foyer with experienced support available; and you’re right next to the gondola. The only things I would wish for are some smaller luxuries (maybe a small renovation due over the summer close? new mattresses would help aching muscles after a day on the slopes and changing out the shower heads might be due. Would then happily give the place 5* and come back every year!

First the good: close to the ski station and bus stop, basically clean (if you don't look at the ceiling or in the fireplace) and the staff is very friendly. But unfortunately one of the examples where it is not surprising when hotels are going down in Switzerland... certainly not because of lack of tourism. But simply because of an offer bordering on arrogance. The prices have kept up with the times but the decor and charm are stuck in the 60s. It's terrible. Possibly a location for a horror movie in the 70s? No furniture would have to be moved.

Attention to the client was superb. They allowed late check in and out, we stayed with our dog and they were very helpful and kind. Highly recommended!
