We visited the Scala restaurant as we had a voucher for a four course romantic dinner. Having called ahead to reserve a window seat (a must, for the view), we were pleased to see, upon arrival, that we did indeed have the last available window side table. We were greeted by friendly staff who proceeded to explain the menu, as well as provide us with our prosecco aperitif. The compliments of the chef was delicious, as was the selection of breads and butters/spreads. The evening continued as it had begun, with great attention being paid to our needs, making sure we were well looked after. The seasonal asparagus soup was simply divine, the highlight of our evening. The main course, Iberico fillet with some strange cheese topping, reminiscent of a Cheeto, was, admittedly, rather surprising, but entirely edible. The risk with such experiments is that they may not please everyone, as may be the case with this dish with other diners, but I can appreciate the effort put in to try and discover new classics. I found the dish overall to be quite tasty, though would not order it again, had I the choice. My partner's fish dish, however, was truly top notch. Finally, the dessert, banana in three styles, was served, and this once again stood out as a top dish. The wine recommendations provided by the waiter were very good (and not the most expensive). After the meal, we had a stroll around the top of the tower, taking in the splendid views of Jena and surroundings, which was a great way to cap off a fine evening with great food and top service. This was my third visit here, and both previous occasions were equally remarkable. This is clearly the best restaurant in Jena (though with a price tag to match, of course).
