We were excited to try Caleta 's newest restaurant Casa Estrella, having a restaurant in the capital we were expecting great things, that was our first mistake. It was difficult to choose our table as the sun was coming down but inside was too hot as they have an open kitchen (another big mistake which I will come back to). We sat in the most shaded outside table and there were a couple of other tables so generally a very quiet night. We ordered drinks, after the waiter checking they had Gordons and Martini Rosso!, and perused the menu. We decided to opt straight for mains so that we could enjoy a dessert, well that was the plan!! Mains, have to say out of the 3 meals the meat dish was thoroughly enjoyed as being the best meat they had ever tasted, but there was a little friction in the kitchen, did not want chips with this dish wanted veg, seeing the chef raising his arms at this request initially made us laugh, having received the veg my friend regretted swapping from chips. They offer the hot stone so you can cook your meat to your liking, however they sear the meat and then put it on the plate with the accompaniments which results in all the blood ending up in a pool on the plate, we made the suggestion for the meat to come separately in this scenario so as not to ruin the veg/chips etc for a diner who likes their food without blood. The other 2 dishes we had were fish. One specifically stated 'steamed veg ' (what came was far from steamed veg) it came straight out of a frozen bag of chopped veg, was cold and swimming in oil or something resembling oil, the fish was served on a plate so small that I literally thought the oil (or whatever it was) was going to land on my lap when the waitress put it on the table. Both fish dishes were returned to be heated up, this is where things became interesting, the chef was so incensed that in full view of us he threw the dishes straight in the bin, how to put your guests at ease NOT. Our new fish dishes came out no better than the first, I was hungry by this time so ate mine (the morning after I am regretting this), but my friend did not like hers and barely touched it as it had been cooked beyond anything recognizable. In a nutshell the waiting staff could not try to be more friendly and helpful, however if you are going to have an open kitchen please employ staff in it that are suited to this environment, the last thing a guest wants to see is staff arguing and talking about them, this made us feel very uncomfortable so we got the bill and left to have dessert elsewhere, thankfully another restaurant redeemed our evening with fabulous desserts and cocktails. Maybe this is teething problems as they have only been open a few days or maybe they have translated their menu incorrectly and it should read cod with cold frozen chopped veg in oil, I don 't know but we will not be returning in a hurry, sorry!!! Such a shame as Caleta is crying out for more upscale restaurants. I would suggest googling photos of steamed veg so you understand what a guest will expect to receive, be more accommodating with choice of veg, chips, potatoes, salad to accompany meat dishes and empty the freezers of all the disgusting chopped veg that is in it.
