My husband and I rented a fabulous apartment up on the South Side of Engelberg, close to the Waldegg Hotel. We had a late start after skiing all day and decided to have a more upscale dinner the night we visited the Waldegg Hotel. We walked and got very lost but eventually found it, only to be told by the reception clerk that the restaurant was full. (Do yourself a favor and make a reservation). The bartender was very friendly and said we could have a lighter supper in their fondue studio. We were visiting for our 30h wedding anniversary and really wanted a full course dinner....plus we had eaten fondue the day before at the Monastery and couldn't fathom eating it again so soon (very rich!). The hotel manager must have seen or heard us and immediately went downstairs to the restaurant to see if we could be accommodated. Within 5 minutes he personally gave us a tour of the modernity refurbished hotel (very, very nice) and had us seated at a beautiful window seat. Our waitress was superb! She was so friendly and mortified when she gave us a Swiss German Menu and quickly realized we spoke English. It was adorable. She gave us great recommendations and our dinner was terriific-the morel mushroom soup, rackt of lamb, their version of a potato pancake and creme brûlée were excellent. As was our bottle of Chilean Red Wine. Reallly excellent service all around. The nicest people we have met in Engelberg. Great dinner in a lovely but unpretentious atmosphere. By the way, the fondue studio looked fabulous too and also had a magnificent view of Mount Titless and Engelberg as well.
