We had a craving for Indian food on a cold, wet, Thursday evening so we decided to give Maharaja a try based on the positive reviews. Looking through the dimly lit restaurant windows directly off the well travelled Ramstein walking platz, the place seemed completely empty. Against our better judgment, we dismissed our "Spidey" senses on account of the poor weather and decided to give it a shot. Not only should we have listened to our intuition, we were ripped off on the final bill. Our waiter, who claimed to be a son of the proprietors seemed not to want to be there. The only other person in the restaurant was someone in the kitchen...the cook, we hoped. As the only guests, one would think to receive excellent service...hardly. Our waiter was more concerned w/ his smartphone than taking care of his only customers. A simple spritz seemed a chore and half the wines listed on the menu were not available. We ordered a paneer appetizer and two common main dishes w/ chicken. The dishes were average; not bad for an Indian restaurant basically in the middle of nowhere. However, the food was not the main reason to ever return. When we asked for the bill, the waiter approached the table w/o a written bill and unabashedly announced what we owed...Knowing what we had ordered, I was slightly taken aback at the price and quickly calculated what we had ordered, 40+ Euro less than quoted. Not wanting to make a scene (in retrospect, who cares, we were the only customers...LOL), I made the conscious decision to just pay thinking this poor chap needed the cash more than I and I justified it as he needed to cover the evenings operating costs...at my expense! So, I paid the bill vowing to myself to never to return and ensuring not one of my circle ever frequent this poor excuse of a restaurant. We should have listened to our intuition.

Felt like Indian food so tried Maharaja… good thing I was there for the company, not the food. Liked the décor, and the food was okay, but the wait was ridiculous. There were only five of us! 30 minutes for the drinks, 45 for the chai. 30 minutes later we get rice… at least 30 minutes later we get everything that was supposed to go on the rice. 20 minutes later we all finally have our food and they bring out more rice to replace what was cold and what was half-eaten because we were so hungry we ate the rice while waiting. Ended up being too spicy for me for the most part (except the naan), but I took home the leftovers anyway ‘cause it was so expensive. I should have just got the naan, but I would have been pretty hangry if I waited all that time just for a snack! And then just to add one more dig, the guy insisted on packing the leftovers for me, because I put the food in the boxes, but only HE knew how to put them in a bag properly. Grrrr. Wasted 30€.To be clear, I don’t handle spicy food well, so I can’t comment on the food quality accurately, but no one else seemed to have much of a problem with their food choices, just on the wait time.

This restaurant was way over rated. The sauce on the chicken tikka massala was more like tomato soup than a sauce. The pompadoms were light but saturated in oil. The only positive was the chicken being nice and moist and the service. Do not recommend if you truly like Indian food.

I've eaten here a couple of times and enjoyed the food. The chef will spice up your dish if required. The starters were a little greasy for me but the curries / rice and naans are good.Restaurant is a little tired looking. Time for a makeover!
