…this is the real deal. Switzerland is expensive, no doubt about it, so a gem like this is a real find. Packed with locals, one whole table of which was playing cards and having a grand time, only added to the pleasure of this cozy Swiss tavern serving up local comfort food by the generous plateful (cash only, so hit the ATM before heading in.) The amazing woman (pictured on the website) was a one-woman show serving the entire packed dining room and a private party out back, keeping no one waiting very long, all things considered. The fixed price meal (45SF for two) included delicious soup and a nice salad followed by a huge dish of homemade spaetzle and high-quality homemade veal sausage topped with a generous amount of caramelized onions. The local beer and wine (at just 5 SF for a large mug of beer and 4SF for a glass of wine) were the perfect pairings with this simple, soul warming meal and a great value as well. Gasthaus Linde as it turned out was also great for meeting other travelers. We shared our table with a couple from Germany, who we then ran into several times during our two days in Appenzell (it's that small,) and who were also delighted with the food at Gasthaus Linde, especially with certain offal offerings which they said are increasingly hard to find and prepared especially well at this establishment. Only adding to the charm of our whole Appenzell experience, the morning we were leaving the village we ran into our waitress and hostess extraordinaire walking her dog. She kissed her hand and waved us a kind farewell. Should we be fortunate enough to visit Appenzell again we would make a bee-line to Gasthaus Linde.
