"This is a good place to eat, near the downtonw and the Castle. Open on sundays, this is a plus in Pau where almost all rest are closed. Big portions and good flavors. Tapas are good !!!!"

One of the redeeming features of Le Vintage Cafe is that it opens for food before the "de rigeur" hour of 7pm that the vast majority other local restaurants seem to adhere to. The other is that the service was good and friendly. Unfortunately that's about it.Our salad starters were far too large and it seems as if the chef was trying a bit too hard - pocorn - really? My salmon (smoked and cooked fresh) and my wife's (goat's cheese parcels) despite being v. tasty were drowned by tons of lettuce and dressing; smaller is better guys. Maybe the locals know best as the majority of them dining there at the time seemed to stick to a main course only? Our main courses, we both had rare burgers, were sadly worse. The bacon was stringy, the burgers lukewarm at best (I know they were rare but...) and the fries, soft and almost inedible. Maybe we caught them on an off night for as I said, there were many locals present by the time we left. Good luck to them.

Maybe it was just our waitress, but when we explained in French (there were two French speakers in our group) that we had one vegetarian in our group and we would like to modify any one of the main courses (by removing the meat) so that he could eat it, we were told no - there would be no changes to the menu. Not even a salad could altered. There was one non-meat dish on the menu - an entrée Salad Chevre Chaud. So he ordered that and a side of frites. It was a bit disappointing as there were other things on the menu that could easily have been modified to avoid him having to eat yet another Chevre Chaud salad (the standard fall back for vegetarians in France). For the meat eaters in the group the meals were of a reasonable standard but expensive for what you got. The service was unhelpful.

Good portions of grilled food ... But that is about it ... All around you are restaurants as you sit outside ... This is more an upmarket grill bar. Poor choice by us. Interior very bland, cutlery marked and tables sticky. Incredibly expense for the fare also. No thanks.

We were spoilt for choice as there were so many restaurants clustered together but the very good value three course menu du jour clinched it . Reasonable portions at reasonable prices and plenty of other people eating there to give the place a bit of atmosphere .
