Although this establishment changed hands last year, the great revue in the Sunday Times by the late Mr Winner is still merited. The charming and welcoming new owners have wisely kept to the successful formula that delighted the demanding food critic on his visit a few years ago. At our recent lunch, three of us shared the copious mixed hors d'œuvre then followed with the plat du.jour of tender pork filets in a tasty sauce accompanied by a macedoine of mixed vegetables and sautéed potato squares. To sample their homemade desserts, the girls opted for the café gourmand option of small portions of that day's selection, whilst I stuck to the full portion of the tarte au pommes, which was served tiède with the traditional scoop of vanilla icecream. With a half carafe of very acceptable white wine and complementary digestifs, the total bill was under 70 euros! Though just an hour's drive from the coast, this Bar,Tabac, Restaurant and Pizzeria is a world away from the supercilious tourist traps that abound in this area. If you are still searching for that elusive restaurant, where you can chat to the owners and the locals (if your French is up to it) in unpretentious surroundings and enjoy an excellent lunch, dinner or pizza, then head for the hills above Nice to this remarkable venture.
