On previous visits to Leymen in recent years there has generally been nothing to choose between the Ange and the Couronne d'Or. This time the Ange fell well short, sadly. We were a Sunday late afternoon / early evening booking for six. Service was below par, food was merely OK - not up to standard.Service was too slow throughout - we do actually prefer to take our time over family celebration meals as this was, but this time the delays were far too long so unacceptable - well over three hours. There were several other service mistakes: vodka & tonics were served instead of the ordered G&Ts for aperos, the one hot starter was served first (after we'd been there an hour and ten minutes) so it chilled while we waited too long for the cold starters. Main courses (40 minutes after starters were finished) were not all served together, and the side dishes appeared haphazardly as the main course progressed, with one plate of veg arriving right at the end after the main items had been eaten. The staff were clearly struggling to cope even though they were not at all full. The first waitress was welcoming and friendly but the other staff were cold and terse and not very efficient, and at the end of a too-long evening they preferred to chat and joke with each other while I waited at the bar for the bill. Pity.
We've always gone to the other restaurants in Leymen and decided to give this restaurant a try. And it was not worth it. We had a soup of the day, which was white aspatagas soup. It's sour as if they tripled the amount of white wine by mistake. I had a duck with orange sauce and saffron rice. It was too sweet. I see they are trying to create Asian flavor, and they really taste wrong. I had a dessert plate which was only satisfying part of the meal. I has so disappointed that I came home and made French onion soup with a red wine. My husband and I agreed that our food at home was much better.Too bad, because people there were so nice... But we will go back to d'or restaurant across when we stop in Leymen for French dining.
The food was good, however the menu choice and price is too similar to Couronne d'Or, seems a bit like a copy and not really innovative.The service was chaotic, they didnt take any notes but then didnt remember which dish was going to which table and we were asked 3 times which dessert we had ordered. It also took quite a while to get the bill.It was quite loud. I got the impression that they make the business with people that come because la couronne d'or opposite is fully booked.
Have eaten here a couple of times and have not been disappointed. The food is very solid, family-style, with a wide selection (ranging from some nice local Alsatian to regular mainstream options - something for everyone) and at decent prices. Service is friendly and atmosphere cosy. Being just across the border from Basel, it is very accessible and a reliable option for a nice and decent meal.
