"After finishing tobacco musee, went a block uphill to ala Scala for lunch. She had mushroom omlet - delicious. I had salad Perigord. A ton of duck gizzards with all great fresh salad ingredients. Well worth the price."

As part of a round trip through the Perigord we stopped in Bergerac for the day. As it was a Sunday on a bank holiday weekend, it seemed choices for lunch in the town centre were somewhat limited. We chose La Scala for its nice location opposite the church, the place seemed busy and prices were reasonable. When we arrived we were promptly shown to one of the few available tables. After a short while sat down, we realised that people at nearby tables were not overly happy. It seemed they had to wait for quite some time. It took a while for them to take our order, and our general impression of a confused service seemed to solidify. It was not that the place was busy because it's good or popular, but because they are terribly slow. Matters got worse, when the food arrived. Firstly, on a hot day we got our fizzy soft drink served in a warm can (well above room temperature) and with a dirty glass. At least it had ice. Some time later our starters arrived. I got what I ordered, my partner got the wrong dish. The starter was ok actually - the salad seemed fresh and crisp, but I am not overly convinced what place chunky carrots have in a leaf salad. Sliced, maybe. But not chunky. A good 20 mins after we finished our starters (the table next to us had left without food by this time), our mains arrived. Never in recent memory have I been so shocked. I had ordered a steak with fries. What I got was below motorway service station quality. The meat was a cheap super stringy cut, the fries undercooked and the overall presentation more like prison food (I imagine). I had to return my first steak as the medium was more undercooked bordering raw. If I had my kitchen thermometer from home I would have found the inside just around ambient temperature while the outside was quite hot. I like my steak medium rare normally but this still twitched. The second steak was cooked, but still the same virtually inedible shoe sole. The fries, well at least they were proper cuts from a potato and not processed, but they were so soggy and greasy that I think they were pan fried at too low a temperature as opposed to deep fried in hot oil. The well known American burger chain does better fries most of the time. My partner had a rotten frie, I had a hair in mine, which looked very much like that hair of the waitress. How it has gone into the second layer of my fries, I don't want to know. We left our food half eaten and had no intention to order any of the dessert that was included in the set menu. This lunch experience sort of hung over our entire day out in Bergerac and spoilt the day quite considerably. We were more than happy to move on to Sarlat later, where we had a gorgeous dinner to make up for this horrible lunch.

We had dinner at La Scala on our first night in Bergerac and although we enjoyed our meal, felt that the meat wasn't cooked to our liking, my partner had lamb, which was tough and over done, I had duck, which was OK but nothing special. The restaurant was very quiet, even on a Saturday night, with just us and one other couple dining. The couple who run the restaurant were delightful and were very happy to help me with my French and therefore we had a really lovely evening. The wine was delicious, E18.90 a bottle for the local red from Begerac.

I ate here on my first night in Bergerac. I chose the foie gras followed by duck a la confit. As recommended by a passenger on the plane who knows the area well. The duck melted in your mouth. For dessert the creme brulee was exceptional. The restaurant is in an idillic setting staff were very pleasant. I would highly recommend eating here.

Worst meal I've eaten in France! That bad! Black, greasy evil looking potatoes, an inedible omelette, a duck which was served in a pool of greasy blood. It was that bad! To top it all we were sat on a table on a slope outside which gave fear that either we or the food could fall at anytime
