Right from the gushing welcome and the city-smart decor, one had the sense of a restaurant targeted at undiscerning Parisien diners who might be more interested to a sense of style above substance. The young ladies who served us were very friendly and willing, but clearly not too experienced. The food was unexceptional. Most of the dishes we ordered were simple and undemanding. The prawns and bulots were meagre but tasty. The mackerel pate was fine but suffered from too much lemon juice. The bowl of mussels and clams was large, but most of the tiny shells were empty and what contents that were found, were not especially tasty. Only the fish received a few more positive comments. The bill for the six of us was twice what we paid in much better dining establishments on the island eg Tout du Cru... and 3 times what we paid for a perfectly acceptable meal round the corner in La Sarrasine.

La Baleine Bleue in Ile de Ré provided an unforgettable dining experience that left me thoroughly impressed. The food was exceptional, showcasing a delightful fusion of French flavors with innovative twists. The freshness and quality of the ingredients were evident in every dish, particularly the exquisite seafood. The service was impeccable, with attentive and knowledgeable staff who made us feel welcomed and well-cared for throughout the evening. The restaurant's elegant and inviting ambience added to the overall charm. For a truly remarkable dining experience in Ile de Ré, La Baleine Bleue is an absolute must-visit.

A tiny piece of goats cheese for starters with a few crumbs and half a grilled little gem lettuce with a few herbs. Both the fish and chicken were served with a small spoonful of sweet potato mash akin to baby food and one stalk of kale. I nearly laughed when it arrived. The dish took a couple minutes to eat and I’m a slow eater! The plates then sat for ages before they were cleared. Not great, which is disappointing as the setting and restaurant look the part but the food is severely lacking.

Had a super meal in this port side restaurant away from the hubbub. Only criticism was the wine list few lower price wines available. Not smart.
