Looking for an earlyish tea on Sunday, not having clearly worked out yet the lie of the land in the vicinity of our hotel for such a purpose, we enquired as we passed as to the opening times and were told by a courteous gentleman that the place would close at 17:00. We arrived before 16:00, ordered drinks and began to peruse the menu only to be tersely informed that the kitchen was already closed. To add insult to injury Matron was presented with coffee rather than the Cava she had requested. This is not unsurprising as the staff were more concerned with their own little world rather than the needs of their clients, one of whom had to resort to considerable ferocity in order to secure her piece of cake! The Bund’s solution was to repair to the nearby supermarket and purchase cold meats, cheese, bread, tomatoes and a good bottle of the local Tinto, produce that we could well have consumed at the benighted place. This we consumed on the balcony of our hotel nearby, about which more to follow. The net result was that we got what we wanted at a lower price with great enjoyment and their profits and reputation, hopefully, have suffered.
