Govinda Ristorante

Govinda was a surprise find for us in Locarno. They serve a fixed vegeterian menu , including vegan options, from which one can choose and order. One can also order an Indian thali wherein the menu items are provided in fixed quantities. The food is...simple and tasty. Not too spicy. The feeling is like a home cooked meal. If you are looking for a typical Indian restaurant serving North Indian fare and with an exhaustive Menu, then do avoid. You will indeed feel disappointed. The staff was friendly and helpful. The Dal will find special mention. The only thing missing was the choice of Roti or any other Indian bread. The only option was Rice. The mixed vegetable option is nice. There is a unique sweet chutney made from ripe Banana that is served with potato filled Kachori. This was a first for me. I found it lacking in spices. The yummy chilli pickle offered by them is pure Fire. The restaurant also retails many different Indian, Ayurvedic and Veganism inspired products/

Given the Film Festival of Locarno we had to take a beautiful walking detour to reach Govinda Rama restaurant and as we asked for directions almost all the folks knew of Govinda restaurant. We were warmly greeted and seated by an extremely friendly multilingual staff...who took the time to engage in real conversation. The ambience from the external seating to the internal courtyard was enchanting. The menu was startingly simple, clear and when needed beautifully explained by the staff. From the Lemoni Zenzero to the Mango Lassi, the Moongh Daal to the Spinach Rice, the Kachori to the Pista Ice-cream every mouthful was a soul lifting experience in purity of vegetarian cooking and aromatic goosebumps. Finally the evening lingered on pulsatingly riding on great conversations with Shri RadhaKanta, the proprietor and his staff. This evening will be etched forever in memory !

Excellent Indian food on a cute, quiet, clean, tiny street that 's conveniently walkable from the Grand Piazza and yet far enough away to avoid the crowds of it. The evening meal service had a few well-chosen dishes of the day and we ordered one of everything, which I think is very common and is what I would recommend so you can try everything. We were there on the night of a big event in the Grand Piazza and it was so refreshing to have a peaceful dinner away from the noise of the square.

I was happy to see an Indian restaurant in Locarno, as I really love Indian food and it is not easy to find it in Ticino. I was quite disappointed by the average food and the quite high price for a midday menu dish. I...expected something more typical and less experimental. However, it was edible and maybe I should give it a second try just to be sure...

Nice internal courtyard, fairly good food. Too bad about the unkind staff, especially the lady at the bar.
