Holzpoldl is a restaurant that has graced the small village of Lichtenberg for several decades. In recent years, this gem has held a "Haube", the Austrian equivalent of a Michelin star. I wanted to go there for years, but finally made it there last night. The decor is that of a typical Austrian country Gasthaus, and there is a separate dining room that accommodates smokers. Service was both friendly and professional, and the quality of the food was simply superb. As an appetizer, we tried the Truffle pasta (linguini in cream sauce with plenty of shaved black truffles) which was delicious. The main course (small medallions of young deer with celery puree and almond balls) was a stunning dish. The meat was incredibly tender and the flavor combination was spot on. None of our party had room for dessert, but we did manage to consume plenty of Austrian red wines. The restaurant does not have a wine list, instead one enters the wine cellar and simply picks out a bottle (all the bottles have a small price label on them). Most of the selection of reds were from Austria, and most of them reasonably priced.Overall, for those visiting Linz (perhaps on one of the many Danube cruises that stop there), Holzpoldl is worth the 20 minute drive to Lichtenberg.
