El Centro Guayadeque

This cave restaurant is one of the attractions of Barranco de Guayadeque, one of the most beautiful places on the island. This place is popular with locals and tourists so it is less busy during the week and always a good idea to book in advance. The food is delicious, we sampled few from the meat menu cordon bleu, the thick beef steak and the fried cheese (one of the best local dishes) and they were all good. Service is swift and the abiance jolly (noise is somewhat different inside a cave). Slight drawback was that meny was in Spanish only so not easy to figure what's what without a friendly fellow diner who could translate for us. One place will visit again given the chance and with friends.

So I kind of starting to see the trend on the island and especially when meat is cooked. The trend is meat is more red or medium by default. Problem is when I asked well done is was still red inside. When I told them again they did something but still red. So watch out for that. Also they place the dishes on the table and then you take it yourself so I must say I have never experienced this anywhere in Europe yet!

Rather cheap and big portions, but the food is in general flavourless. We ordered appetizers, fish mains and house wine. Appetizers were quite interesting although a bit greasy and if we had finished with them we would be pleased. Prawns and fried squids has zero flavour to them. Fish was a total disaster, was oily, greasy and covered in vinegar. White wine was very very sweet.

We came to this restaurant for a group meal. Being a cave the inside decor was basic and most tables and benches looked like they were made of rock too. Their was plenty of food and most was tasty, but the chicken was overcooked and looked burnt on the outside. It was a good experience for a restaurant with a difference.

Really nice plays.. in a cave...the starter bread with dip from the house is amazing. Food also really good. Not huge portion..the chips were home made but cold and soft. Make reservation!
