"First the positives; Beautiful setting with friendly and charming staff..I'm afraid the chef concentrates on presentation at the expense of flavour. Fussy details such as wrapping foie gras in Serrano ham add nothing to the enjoyment. We don't expect large portions in a fine restaurant but the lamb ,while delicious,,was tiny.Good cuisine is about more than painting pretty pictures."

We really enjoyed our stay in this rather shabby chic chateau in a charming small village very near the lovely town of Uzès. Our room was adequate although the bathroom needed some attention. There was no shower glass or curtain so every time one had a shower (in the bath) the whole bathroom was a wet zone – a wet room which this wasn’t intended to be! The shady outdoor dining area (weather permitting) is most attractive, although the only views are of the chateau. We were lucky enough to be able to have breakfast and dinner outside – almost too hot in fact. The highlight of our stay here was the food (dinner) which was superb. I loved the fact that the portions were on the small side so one got up feeling just satisfied not over fed. Breakfast was fine – in fact above average for French continental. The big disappointment was the pool. The situation and surrounding areas were lovely, although some of the loungers have seen better days. The little restaurant near the pool serves an excellent luncheon. The pool itself was cloudy and there was a lot of algae around the bottom edges which wasn’t removed the whole three days we used it. There were a lot of children using the pool so the water should be tested and adjusted accordingly each day which it wasn’t. The third day the algae was floating in lumps on the surface together with an enormous amount of dead wasps! Such a shame as this could easily be put right. As I said despite the pool and the bathroom we enjoyed our stay but for the price which was not insignificant it needs a bit of an overhaul.

As much as I would like to love that restaurant, I simply can’t. We had dinner, my wife and I, two nights in a row. Staff is extremely friendly but not well trained/ experienced. That’s ok though. Food choices are extremely limited and expensive. You can sense that the Chef is trying his best and it’s almost there, but honestly 29 Euros for a pasta risotto with 30 grams of lobster on top is a bit tacky. We loved the settings and we love Arpaillargues-et-Aureillac. We just felt that we were paying for something we didn’t quite get.

This was one of our favourite meals through our whole journey from Lyon through Ardeche and Uzes, around Luberon and up to Annecy. Perhaps more rustic than a Michelin star type of place, but I preferred it. Far less presumption for rival quality. Prices are good considering the quality of the food. Each dish was a pleasurable discovery, for the adults as well as for the children. And the hostess, a native from Uzes, was absolutely delightful. An all-around genuine experience with no false pretensions.

The fig tree in this chateau's courtyard is the centrepiece to a regal setting with a gentle and refined time-brushed patine. The service, and the staff's professionalisme and amiability follow suit. To me, this place is purely magical. Nothing should change and certainly not any renovation should come to destroy the whispered beauty and romanticism of the ensemble (accommodation, bar, restuarant. poolside
