Cafe-Konditorei Hagmann

We had a lot of sweets as we made our way along the Danube on a holiday river cruise, so I have some perspective. We visited this place as part of an excursion from the cruise, and it included a chocolate demo here along with...a lovely piece of cake and coffee. I wish we could have lingered here longer. Since we were part of a program, we had a second floor section of a room reserved for us (passed by cases and cases of lovely pastry). This beautiful rectangle of chocolate layer cake was waiting at each place. It was both light and rich at the same time, and the coffee was hot and flavorful. That would have been all I needed to love this place, but we also got a nice chocolate demo by the owner. He did a very succinct and organized presentation of how chocolate goes from bean to confection and even prepared some chocolate candy right then and there, with samples passed. His passion, knowledge, and hospitality were clear. This is a multi-generational family business on a super cute street in old Krems. Earlier in the day, before we knew which konditorei we'd be visiting on this excursion, I noticed an elderly lady stopping at the outdoor stand in front of this store to purchase some pastries, which she put in the wicker basket hanging on her arm. Her little dog patiently waited for her to finish the transaction before the two of them continued on their way. It really was a charming scene from central casting. Except that this place is the real thing all the way and was my favorite confectioners/cafes/konditorei of the trip.

Order a coffee and some pastry or cake and go sit outside on small street terrace. You will have a top spot to follow the people passing by the street. If you wan to sit inside and downstairs look a bit crowded, go to the...upstairs salon!

We managed to order our coffee and pastries and get a place out on their terrace where we could people watch . Service excellent as was the quality of food and drinks. Does get busy but so it should. If you are in the area, pop...in.

We participated in a chocolate making demonstration from a multi generational chocolate maker in the old town of Stein. The cafe was fantastic and their cakes were terrific and don't forget to buy the chocolate.

I remember these from my childhood and they were delicious here! Lovely place for a quick afternoon sweet treat. Lots of chocolate, baked good and delicious looking fruit parfaits.
