We slowly crept through the secret forest of newly opened leaves to find ourselves in a clearing; there stood the fairy tale building of L'auberge de la Croix ou Pile. The restaurant was full which is always a good sign. The menu was varied, yet appealing to us because of the focus on local providers of produce - a valuable asset. We had the escargots to start with a wonderfully rich garlic butter. We followed with the lamb which was cooked to perfection - rose pink - and served with local vegetables and some beautiful new potatoes. The staff were accommodating to the younger members of our group - we were on a business trip - and met the needs of all tastes! On our next trip to Douai, we most definitely hope to return and we would like to thank M et Mme Renard for introducing us to this wonderful restaurant.
