We took the train from Berlin to Frankfurt to catch our flight back to the United States which was early the next morning. We were therefore only in Frankfurt for just over 12 hours and wanted to get one last traditional german meal in. After checking TripAdvisor, I found two restaurants (the number 1 restaurant) and Atschel (which was number 8 (now 7) out of 2000+ restaurants in Frankfurt). We asked the hotel to make a reservation but since the first restaurant did not pick up the phone (they had just opened at 5pm), we went with Atschel as they answered the phone (as they're open for lunch as well). Overall I kind of wish we had waited for the other restaurant to pick-up the phone. Anyway, here's the scoop. Please be aware, Atschel does not take credit cards -- so you need to ensure you have enough cash. Fortunately, there was a cash machine in the airport (we were staying at an airport hotel) and then we caught the train from there. The service is not friendly, you may be assigned to a communal table (common in beer halls), and the seating is tight (the other 3 in my party had to get up when I went to the bathroom). The positives -- the food is very good and reasonably priced. Personally I was really glad I ordered the Frankfurt Schnitzel which comes with the traditional Frankfurt green sauce (I had to look up what that meant). It was very tasty. Having said that, my husband and sons did not like the sauce. I make schnitzel at home, but we use a beef broth as our sauce. This was probably the best schnitzel we had during our entire Germany trip (good flavor, the breading was not over powering and did not fall off, it was evenly cooked, and the portions were large -- so could possibly split) and their fried potatoes were good as well. Two of our meals also came with salads and my husband and I both liked them and the salad dressing. Unfortunately, the restaurant was very hot as they do not have air conditioning. We had walked briskly to get there from the train to make our reservation and it had just rained, so was humid. As it was 90 degrees outside and we were warm already, it was sweltering in the restaurant. We're from Texas and are used to the heat, but generally restaurants are air conditioned so we weren't used to this (plus no breeze indoors). I ordered Apfelwein which was OK but as good as I was expecting. On a positive note, it was a bargain at 1.80 euro per glass (half the price of the Spezi and Coke that the rest of my family ordered). Our total, with drinks, was 61 euro before tip. Overall, is it really the #7 or 8 restaurant in Frankfurt? I certainly hope not, otherwise Frankfurt really needs some help on restaurants. Would I go again? Maybe, if we were in the area and it was a cooler day. Another nice aspect is that it is easy walking distance to the river and Romerberg (the old town square) which was cool to see. Once we got to the square, we took the nearby S train back to the airport. Good luck with your decision!

The food was a sensation! Heavenly feast with great Bembel (apple wine) which makes the combo even more exceptional. We ordered the Haxe (pork knuckle) and the Schäufelchen (pork shoulder). The restaurant has an old school German look and feel, so be prepared to share a table if you are less than a party of 6 people. Regardless, with apple wine flowing from pitchers combined with plates of butchers cuts, this is a MUST. I would recommend to order a table but if you are 2 or 3 people just swing by unannounced, and be seated with others at a table listening to the magpie chirp every few minutes throughout the restaurant chatter.

I'm not a native German but I've been living here long enough to know the difference between a freshly cooked Schnitzel and something that was stored waiting to be warmed up and served. Also, the Frankfurter Schnitzel comes with Bratkartoffeln and not Pommes (as in fried). Terrible service, dirty tables and loud. Won't come back.

We went here on the off chance and thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was excellent and the ambulance was a busy and family oriented. It is in the German bench style so you could be sat next to people who you don't know. If you want a typical German experience you won't go far wrong by going here.
