Warning: Like many places in Austria, smoking IS allowed. And not just in a cornered off smoking section (it is only restaurants over 50square meters that require a separate section...thank you Wikipedia). The waitressed were super accommodating with our ueber-American distaste for smoke and found us a corner table near the door and separated from where most people were sitting, but we knew we'd have to dine and dash as we were there early and all the tables but ours were reserved. We know this is an Austrian issue, and not one with this specific restaurant, so we can look forward to 2018 when the "no smoking in restaurants" ban finally makes its way to all Austrian restaurants. That aside - a perfect place to visit! We read about this in the NY Times "36 hours in Salzburg" and were not disappointed. This is our 4th day in Austria and it was hands-down the best meal we've had. And the cheapest! For 32 Euro we enjoyed a glass gruener veltiner (3.20 Euro!) and of Riesling (3.30 Euro!) and an Almdudler (sparkling apple juice), the Pork schnitzel "cordon blue" and the beef goulash. Really high quality ingredients and delicious food. Same for the wine! You will not be disappointed. The ambiance is very traditional Austrian/German, no-frills, and cozy. The waitstaff is friendly and it is full of locals. We only heard one other table speaking English (a shocker for Salzburg) and it seemed like there were a lot of college students and locals gathering with friends. IIt isn't hard to find if you're on foot and is an easy, flat walk from the city center down a quaint, narrow "gasse" (alley).

small old Gasthaus in the Altstadt with a very comfortable atmosphere and great Service, unfortunately the day we went the kitchen was not on top form, my wife and I both had the Herrn grostl but unfortunately the potatoes were overcooked and it all turned a bit mushy! apart from that small hiccup a great place but you must book as it's small and popular!

Nice place, hidden in one of the small sidestreets in Salzburg. A very old restaurant with a nice choice of wines. Had the wiener schnitzel with fritatensuppe as a starter, really enjoyed it. The only thing that bothered me (but that is all over Austria) is people smoking inside.

If you are looking for authentic Austrian food while visiting Salzburg, this is the place to go! The food, desserts, portions and prices are really good. They serve typical dishes, all freshly made. You can't miss visiting this cozy tavern while in Salzburg.
