Altstadtcafe Stade

We have been here twice when visiting family and both times had a lovely time. As mentioned by the previous reviewer, the house itself is amazing. Inside it has a cozy feel slightly reminiscent of a cafe from the 70's but in a good sense. This time we went for lunch and the quality of 4 out of the three dishes were amazing. Salmon on a bed of linguine and spinach and the soup of the day (carrot, orange and thyme). I would have given it 5 stars if the third dish had been similar and there had been bread with the soup. Sadly my daughter chose spaghetti with tomato sauce which tasted as if it had come out of a tin. Staff were very friendly and did not rush us. Prices were reasonable particularly whenconsidering the location. Next time we will try the cakes which looked absolutely stunning on display. Worth mentioning that they also offer a breakfast buffet (eat as much as you like) for around 10 euros pp including a pot of tes or coffee for which you should prebook.

My review is about breakfast. For a decade, it has been normal for many people living in this part of Germany to take the weekend breakfast in a café or restaurant that it offers as a buffet. Twenty years ago there were a few options, today the offer multiplied. Is a good feeling especially with good weather to enjoy a lazy breakfast in a terrace or patio. The old town café has a back terrace with a patio made by several houses hundreds years old. The café itself is located on the first floor of one of these charismatic houses with irregular construction. The breakfast offered is not the best I already got, but the same level that can only be found in some four and five star hotels. I'm back to make sure to eat.

Visited Stade with my family of five. When the top picks were overcrowded, they finally came here. First, the whole café is to be noticed in a beautiful old building, but the interior is far from charming beings in an eighty hotel furniture style and plastic laminate flooring. Cake is ok’ish, but not exciting. Unfortunately, order cakes directly at the counter while drinks are ordered at the table, which means that our drinks came when the cake has already been eaten. All in all is quite slow and not too attentive, although the place was half empty.

We went to breakfast and it was nice. It is clearly a real tradition in Germany and it was nice to sit together over a pleasant breakfast. There were many and varied dishes, although some might have been refreshed faster. Very good.

Try the special wedding soup. It's excellent. We were with a big group and they took care of us very well.
