Only found this by accident as we were staying in the Ramada next door, and what a find. We popped in for lunch and were served by the most cheerful Karen who turns out to be the owner. The other patrons were obviously local businessmen who are frequenters as she knew everyone's names and was having happy banter with everyone. Its the sort of "local" service like this that's missing in the corporate zombie churn outs that we all have to put up with nowadays. We spotted on the menu a French Beef Dip sandwich (recently being made famous by Man vs Food). As we don't have that in the UK, my husband ordered it and I plumped for a Halibut Burger. After two bites he was claiming it was the best sandwich he had ever eaten. My halibut was hot, the batter light and the roll and salad really fresh and the fries were tangy hot, but I was being taunted at having missed out - so we went back the next day so that I could experience the sarnie for myself and he's right, its excellent.Served in a soft baguette that's been lightly dipped, the home roasted slivers of beef melt in the mouth. Its accompanied by a bowl of jus for extra dipping and a mound of home roasted thick cut potatoes (or fries if you prefer). I couldn't get the recipe out of Karen but I will be experimenting. We had said we'd be back the next day, and when we went in we were greeted like long lost friends. A bonus in a faraway city. Thanks to Karen and her crew for a last and happy memory of Calgary !
