You find the Ruhrquellehuette when you leave Winterberg on the 480 road to the north. Just before the turnoff on the L740 road, which brings you past the source of the Ruhr, the ski area with the Ruhrquellehuette is to the right. The Ruhrquellehuette is a low wooden structure, containing a bar and a restaurant. In the summer there is of course no ski activity; the restaurant is then frequented by tourists on bicycle, horseback or making a walking tour in the surrounding woodlands, An obvious point of interest is the nearby source of the river Ruhr (yes, the Ruhr where the industrial Ruhr area takes its name from). Because this area is used for skiing in the winter, there is ample space for everything, including parking your car. When the weather is clement you can sit outside at wooden tables; on the day of my visit, having the meal inside the restaurant was the best option. The menu contains mostly simple food, French fries with sausage, omelets, schnitzels, but the quality is good. The service is matter-of-fact but efficient. The Veltins draft beer is cold and good. The Ruhrquellehuette is a nice stopping place to partake in simple but tasty food without frills.
Great, cheep pistes, not expensive. We used the carriage, lots of fun. Snow guaranteed the whole season, the only place with this guarantee in the region. The food is typical, authentic an not expensive. The service is kind. You need to be there!Two little issues: First: the ski-rental is not well organised (we needed more than 2 hours to get a carriage). There is a lot of improvement possibleSecond: the "Hütte” is absolutely crowdy at lunch time. A ticketing system can avoid trouble between guests.
