We passed this bar en route to the square to watch the music and dancing and were instantly struck by the atmosphere of joy coming from it. Barcelona were playing Valencia and it was heaving, not a chance of a table . As we wandered around the town centre we recognized we were judging all the other places against this passing impression and decided that we'd at least try for a table. When its meant to be you get lucky and we lucked on the perfect table. Me facing out into the square for people watching. (gotta love watching tiny kids dressed in their finest running wild safe and happy in the pitch dark And him with a great view of the game. First thing I noticed was the waiter (proprietor? I love it when someone elevates their work into an art form. He was the only person serving and moved at the speed of light with smiles for everyone. We were served immediately and when he returned for food orders we were still pondering. He gave us splendid advice on customer favourites, including warning us against over ordering. (3 dishes between 2 The patatas bravas came first. They looked unlike any I've ever been served. An enormous bowl of homemade crisps with skins still on. piping hot, curled up slithers of crunchy, salty, potato flavoured potato, served with a paprika mayo. I've never really got the attraction of this so famous dish, so these have become my benchmark. The patatas bravas against which all others shall be judged. The baby squid was generous and very tasty. The chicken schnitzel bocadillo was, again, a revelation. Just perfect. We had 3 small beers and one large, served in frosted glasses. You wouldnt believe me if I revealed the bill for this city centre treasure. We didnt. I'll reveal that it was between €21 and €22. Even more importantly we were strangers made warmly welcome on the night of an enormously busy family party and received really kind service. I have learned a valuable lesson here not to use TA rankings too seriously. Successful local joints such as this fly under the radar having no need at all to court extra custom. I was reluctant to write a review for this reason .... but for the waiter/host working such an incredibly busy floor solo ... and, those patatas bravas!
A bit off the tourist track in Ciutadella, but close to the hustle and bustle of the central squares we came across this great Cafeteria. We joined the locals for a cooling drink. The owner spoke perfect English and it was great to take in the sights and sounds of the real Cuitadella. We then decided to linger and ordered tapas, all of which was great especially the baby squid and spicy potatoes. Loved the atmosphere.
